Print vs digital … keep beating that horse

Thought that this was an interesting comment from Peter Feld on the ongoing digital vs. paper debate (well, it’s more of an autopsy that a debate).  // Link

“The real error of print people is thinking that cost is a factor driving people from print to the web — as though people go to the web to save the price of a newspaper or magazine. Wrong. They go to your website because the web is where they hang out, and because they are hoping to find something that would be fresher than they could in a paper printed last night and filled with yesterday’s news.”

Municipal Application

The same thought applies when it comes to municipal communications. Even though a lot of towns and villages can (and still should) get their messages out in the free, local weekly or in a direct mail-out (eg. with the water bill) that doesn’t mean they can ignore the online component. In order to reach the audience that hangs out online, your website needs to be up to date and full of relevant and easily accessed information that people can comment on. By not doing this, you’re not only missing a growing audience but also a golden opportunity to engage youth.
